Man chops off own hands to stop himself from stealing

27-year-old Egyptian man, Ali Afifi, apparently couldn't stop himself from stealing by sheer willpower alone. Obviously, the only logical solution was to chop off his hands. That's not the best part.

Oh no, the real highlight of this story is quite HOW he accomplished this feat:

"[Ali] went to the main train station in the western Egyptian town of Tanta four years ago and waited for the train to come his way before putting his hand under its wheels as hundreds of passengers watched in horror."

That was just the one hand, by the way. Immediately following that, his father had him committed to an asylum, as you do. And, as you do, upon release, he went and chopped off the other one. Sadly, the source article doesn't reveal how he managed that difficult second separation.

I would assume some sort of belt sander and a lot of time on his han-- Oh.

But that's not all! There's also the following quote, talking about Mr Afifi's attempts to seek counsel from his local religious authority figure:

"He advised me to repent and seek God’s help…I then decided to cut my hands off"

When faced with the arduous task of trying to be a better person and, y'know, just stop stealing things, Mr Afifi instead elected to chop off both of his hands. One could almost feel inspired by this story.

Of course, on the other hand...
